Explanation
The principle — how much of a PDF Claude can actually see depends on how long it is.
Why the key is correct — Anthropic states that Claude analyses both text and visual elements — images, charts and graphics — in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, and that for PDFs from 101 to 1,000 pages it processes text only and does not analyse visual elements. A 300-page report sits in the second band, so the words come through and the figures do not.
Why the others are wrong — images are not stripped from every PDF, the rule is counted in pages rather than megabytes, and naming a chart cannot switch on an analysis that is unavailable for a document this long.
Remember this — if the figures are the point, extract the pages that hold them and attach those. A short PDF of the twelve pages you care about will be read far more completely than the full report.
